STUART l. CROMARTY

2005  INDUCTION TO THE RHODE ISLAND AQUATIC HALL OF FAME

Stuart made a name for himself with his swimming prowess in-his native homeland of South Africa. He received the highest high school honors for swimming, water polo and lifesaving and was the State captain of both the swimming and-lifesaving teams.

 He swam on the South African National team from 1980 to 1984.  Unfortunately, due to the South African government apartheid policies he was shut out from both the 1980 and 1984 Olympics.

Boston University enticed Stuart to the United States of America with a full swimming scholarship where he became the University’s first foreign student captain.

Stuart chose the University of Rhode Island for his Doctorate program in Physiology and Neuroscience. Here is where he started his Masters Swimming career, and also coached the Rams Master Swim Team from 1989 to 1995. From 1997 to present, Stuart has been named a USMS All American – each year winning at least one individual event at a National Masters competition. He currently holds 2 USMS individual records, 9 USMS relay records, 3 World Masters relay records and 42 New England individual records. From 1993 to present, he has had 104 USMS National Top Ten times. He is also no stranger to open water swims, being a 7-time winner of the annual SAVE THE BAY Swim in R.I.

Stuart has been a blessing to Rhode Island swimming, an inspiration to many, and has given so much of himself to others and to our sport of swimming. Dr. Stuart Cromarty is an Associate Professor of Biology at Assumption College, Worcester, MA. He is married to Malia Schwartz-Cromarty and they live in Foster, RI.
