Carl received his schooling in Cranston, graduating from Cranston High School in the early 1940’s.  During his younger days, Carl swam for “Bud” Latham at the Central Boys’ Club in Providence.  While swimming for the Boys’ Club, he became an outstanding swimmer in AAU competition.  After winning numerous Rhode Island and New England age group championships, he culminated his career by holding the National AAU Junior 300 yard individual medley; the New England 300 yard individual medley; the New England 200 yard breaststroke title; and the N.E. 440 yard freestyle championship.  Carl entered Brown University during the WWII era, in the N.R.O.T.C. program.  He was commissioned a Naval officer in 1945.  It was during these years at Brown, that Carl established himself as on of their all-time great swimmers, becoming the first-and the only swimmer representing Brown- to win an N.C.A.A. title.  Carl won this title in 1946 at Yale University, winning the National Intercollegiate 200 yard breaststroke event.  Carl was elected Captain of Brown for the 1944, 1945, and 1946 seasons.  During his years at Brown, Carl held New England records in the 200 yard breaststroke and 300 yard individual medley, in addition to his national title in the 200 yard breaststroke.  in addition to his swimming exploits, Carl was a guard on the Brown University football team during the 1944-45 season.  In his senior year at Brown, Carl was listed in the “Who’s Who” in American colleges for his outstanding record in swimming.  Perhaps one of Carl’s outstanding swimming feats occurred in an AAU meet in 1944, when he set 6 records in 6 separate events.  Carl is now a successful real estate broker, living in Redondo Beach, California.
