JEAN SENIOR STEPHENS

1986 INDUCTION TO THE RHODE ISLAND AQUATIC HALL OF FAME

Premier breaststroker for the Wanskuck Boys’ Club during the 1940’s.  Using the “orthodox” breaststroke technique, she startled the swimming world in 1947 by upsetting the defending New England Champion, Clara Lamore, in the 200 breaststroke event.  Clara, using the new “butterfly” breaststroke, suffered her first defeat in five years of competition.

Jean, competing with her twin sister Joan, dominated many New England A.A.U. Championship meets during this era, especially in the breaststroke events, and the unique trio of Jean, Joan, and Marion Senior combined to win numerous medley relay titles.

Jean also won the New England Senior 200 meter breaststroke championhip in 1949.
