RICHARD BURROWS

1987 INDUCTION TO THE RHODE ISLAND AQUATIC HALL OF FAME

Outstanding age group, high school and college swimmer for the Cranston Swim Club, Cranston High School West, and Brown University.

In 1972, he completed an outstanding high school career by leading Jimmy Lynch’s Cranston West Falcons to the State and New England Championships.  He was the New England Champion in the 200 and 400 yard freestyle as well as the anchor swimmer on the winning 400 yard freestyle relay.  He was selected the R.I. and New England AAU Outstanding Swimmer of the Year as well as Cranston West’s Athlete of the Year.  From 1072 through 1976 he was an outstanding swimmer at Brown University under coach Ed Reed.  Throughout his career he captured six New England titles in four different events.  He also set six Brown University varsity records and led the Bruins to the New England Championships in 1975 and he qualified for NCAA Nationals in Texas in the 400 yard individual medley.

Richard continues to excel as a masters swimmer earning All-American Masters honors in 1979 and 1985.

He was inducted into the Brown University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1981.

From 1979 through 1984 he was head swimming coach for the Little Rhody Aquatic Club which won one New England and five state titles.  He served as Aquatic Director at Providence College from 1981 through 1984 and from 1982-1984 he coached St. Mary’s Bayview Academy, where he had five swimmers named to the prep school All-American team.

From 1984 to present he has served as Head Swim Coach at Dennison University (Ohio) and in 1986 he was voted NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming Coach of the Year.
