WALTER KLIMASEWSKI
1987 INDUCTION TO THE RHODE ISLAND AQUATIC HALL OF FAME
Walter represents the “old time” era of competitive swimming in Rhode Island (1927-1935). He grew up in the Olneyville section of Providence and was a swimmer and diver for the Olneyville Boys’ Club.
In diving competition Walter will be remembered for defeating the long-time diving champion, Bud Latham, in a R.I. A.A.U. championship meet in 1934. He won the Rhode Island and New England titles several times, from 1930 through 1934, in the freestyle and breaststroke events, including championship diving competition. Walter also competed in the Army National Guard (New England and Eastern) Championship Meet in 1932 and swam to first place honors in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle, 50 and 100 yard backstroke, and the 50 breaststroke.
Walter was the R.I. Boys Swimming League champion in four events in 1931.
Walter is presently swimming again in Masters competition, and has accomplished an outstanding record in his age group. He is listed in the New England Masters Championship Top Ten in the 50 yard freetyle, backstroke, and breaststroke from 1981 through 1986. He is also a New England Top Ten Masters Swimmer in the 100 yard free and 100 yard breaststroke.
In 1985, Walter was named to the National Masters Long Course Top Ten in the 50 yard freestyle.
His aquatic activities over the years have included: officiating and coaching, Red Cross aquatic instruction, water safety exhibitions and State Lifeguard service.
