DAVID MCINTYRE

1988 INDUCTION TO THE RHODE ISLAND AQUATIC HALL OF FAME

Dave began his swimming career at the Pawtucket Boys’ Club in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s.  During that time he won numerous New England Junior swimming titles.  At Pawtucket High School, swimming for Max Read, Dave starred in the freestyle, backstroke, and individual medley.  He went on to an illustrious career at North Carolina State University and in 1955 he made All-American honors along with teammate Bill Sonner.  This recognition was given by a selection process that included over 260 swimming coaches throughout the country.  He was picked as the 9th man in the 100 yard freestyle, 150 individual medley, and as a member of the 4th ranked N.C. State Medley relay.

That following summer, Dave represented the N.C. State Aquatic Club team in A.A.U. meets where he set an American record in the 160 individual medley (1:44.4), beating the old mark by over four seconds.  In April of 1956, Dave teamed with Dick Fadgen, Bill Sonner, and Jack Nelson, to set a world record in the 400 yard medley relay.  That same year his North Carolina State Aquatic Club won the National AAU Championship edging out the New Haven Swim Club.

Since leaving North Carolina, Dave has held numerous coaching positions in the field, most noteworthy being coach of the Vesper Boat Club in Philadelphia, PA.  He is active in Masters swimming in that area.
