PAUL H. MANGILI

1993 INDUCTION TO THE RHODE ISLAND AQUATIC HALL OF FAME

After watching his sister, Laurie, compete in a swim meet, Paul approached Paul Rossi, Hall of Fame swimmer and coach, in 1973 to join the Cranston YMCA swim team.  He won his first event at the Elks Invitational in the 25 yard freestyle.

In 1976, Paul was name New England Outstanding Swimmer for boys 10 and under and set N.E. and district YMCA records.  After his first RI State Junior Championship in 1975 in the 50 yard backstroke and 50 yard breaststroke, Paul went on to win 14 more titles over the next 10 years.

In 1977, Paul joined the Brown Swim Club, later named the Little Rhody Aquatic Club, under Hall of Fame coaches Ed Reed and Richard Burrows.  He was named New England Outstanding Swimmer of the Year from 1980 to 1984.

Paul competed in the Eastern Zone Championships from 1980 to 1982.  He also competed in the Junior National Championships in 1982,1983, and 1984.  Paul was named Rhode Island Swimmer of the Year by the Swimming Coaches and Officials Association in 1983, 1984, and 1985.

At Bishop Hendricken High School, under Hall of Fame coach Dave Hanson, he had record setting performances at the Max Read Invitationals, Brown Interscholastic’s, the R.I. Interscholastic Championships, and the New England Interscholastic Championships.  In 1983 Paul became the first New England Interscholastic swimmer to break the 2 minute barrier in the 200 yard individual medley.  Named to the Providence Journal All State Team for three consecutive years in three different events, Paul received the Outstanding Swimmer Award a the High School Championship meet in 1984.  He capped this by being named Bishop Hendricken’s Outstanding Senior Swimmer.

Paul attended Arizona State University where he received his B.S. in Finance.  He participated in four PAC-10 championships and was named to the PAC-10 all Conference Team as a breaststroker in 1986 and 1987.  He was c0-captain of the 1988 team.

Presently, Paul is an assistant coach for the Bruin Swim Club where he developed national and regional swimming champions in age group swimming.
