DAVID MOWRY
2000 INDUCTION TO THE RHODE ISLAND AQUATIC HALL OF FAME
David had an extremely successful competitive career while at the Rhode Island Aquatic Association and then the Cranston YMCA. At age 13, he moved to the Brown Swim Club, which changed its name to the Little Rhody Aquatic Club in 1979, and also competed at Cranston East High School where he earned All-State honors in 1978, 1979 and 1980 in the 200 free, 500 free, and 200 individual medley events.
In 1980, Mowry was the only Rhode Island swimmer to win an event in the New England Interscholastic Championship meet when he won the 200 individual medley. He was named the Rhode Island Interscholastic Swimmer of the Year and the Rhode Island Swim Coaches and Officials Association Swimmer of the Year in 1980. He set numerous records in the distance freestyle and medley events.
Mowry competed in the Junior National Championships in the 1650 freestyle in 1980 and the Senior National Championships in 1981. David continued his swimming career at West Point where he swam for Rhode Island native Jack Ryan and set freshmen and school records in the distance events. David, affectionately called “Mowry”, has recently been involved in Masters Swimming and is a nationally certified swimming official. David lives with his family in Minnesota.
