Edward S. Bogda

1993 Special Award of Recognition

       Ed was associated with the Water Safety department of the Greater Rhode Island Chapter of the American Red Cross. In 1951 he began his career as a waterfront director of Beach Pond Camps Inc. of RI. In 1970 he became volunteer Water Safety Chairman for the local Red Cross and in 1978 became volunteer chair of Safety Services in Providence. He published several articles on water safety which included a 10 year study on accidental drownings in Rhode Island. For fourteen years he was on the volunteer staff of two national Red Cross aquatic schools, Camp St. Thomas Moore in Connecticut and Camp Tevya in Brookline, New Hampshire. In 1979, he became the first volunteer assistant director of Camp Tevya.

Ed taught physical education at the Henry Barnard School in Providence and at Park View Junior High school in Cranston. In 1961 he became a professor of physical education at Rhode Island College and was their soccer coach for fourteen years and golf coach for six years.  Upon his untimely death, in 1980 he was chairman of the Department of Physical Education and Health at the college.

Ed was a founding member of the Rhode Island Board of Approved Interscholastic Swimming Officials Association and once served as Secretary/ Treasurer of that organization.
