CHARLES W. WILCOX

2004 INDUCTION TO THE RHODE ISLAND AQUATIC HALL OF FAME

 

Charlie Wilcox began his swimming career at the Pawtucket Boys Club in 1946. He developed into an accomplished competitive diver and multi-stroke swimmer. During 1954 to 1956, Charlie competed at East High School in Pawtucket.

In 1956, Charlie went on to join the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned to be a Water Safety instructor and competed for the Hawaii Marines from: 1956 to 1958.   At the all Marine Corps Swimming and Diving Championships he helped establish a national record in the 200meter Medley Relay.

After his tour of duty with the USMC, Charlie became the Aquatic Director for the Providence Boy’s Club South Side under the direction of Bud Latham.  Later, he assumed the duties of Mr. Latham upon his retirement. He continued as a Water Safety instructor conducting learn to swim programs throughout the Providence area. Charlie also coached the Providence Boys Club swim team. In addition, became actively involved with the Rhode Island Swim Coaches and Officials Association.
