CYNDIE GINISH-HUNDERTMARK
1993 INDUCTION TO THE RHODE ISLAND AQUATIC HALL OF FAME
Cyndie was an AAU Age Group competitor from 1961 to1972 and was a record setter in many AAU meets and Age Group Swimming Championships. She received the outstanding swimmer awards at such sites as Buffalo, NY, Keene, NH, Quantico, VA and Rhode Island.
In 1966, at age 12, she entered the Women’s Open competition to qualify for the Outstanding Rhode Island Female Swimmer, and became the youngest person ever to achieve this honor, and continued her domination for seven consecutive years. Among her other prestigious awards were: the Edward E. Haire Award as the top Rhode Island AAU competitor in 1971 ; the Bradford A. Clark Award as the first Rhode Island female to break the one minute barrier for the 100 yard freestyle; the New England Top Female swimmer in 1970-71 awarded by the New England Swimming Coaches and Officials Association; and the first female to ever receive the Student-Athlete award at Slater junior High School.
In international competition, against a team from Great Britain, both here and in England, Cyndie was the only swimmer to remain undefeated in all her events. At the national level, she was a finalist in Canada, the YMCA Championships at Fort Lauderdale, and the Women’s Collegiate Championships in Cincinnati, Ohio; despite attending a college which had no swimming team.
Her diverse background includes synchronized swimming at Lake Erie College where she performed and choreographed many of the shows’ numbers, and Red Cross certified Water Safety Instructor which she received in 1971 and continued instructing until 1990. Cyndie taught Special Education and handicapped children within the Pawtucket School System. She has coached swim teams at the Tupperware Recreation Facility, at Seekonk High School, and Davies Career and Technical High School.
Cyndie is currently teaching Health Education and Physical Education at Davies School.
