JEN SALAMON MORIN
2009 INDUCTION TO THE RHODE ISLAND AQUATIC HALL OF FAME
Jen’s successful swimming career began in 1986 as a member of the Barrington YMCA Swim Team. She then joined the East Providence Boys Club Swim Team. Jen attended Warren High School, a school which did not field a swim team. However, she was still able to represent her school in individual events at the RI Girl’s State Meet and at The Bay View Invitational. In 1990, she captured 1st place and a pool record in the 50 freestyle and earned 2nd place in the 100 butterfly at the RI Girl’s Meet. The following year she placed 2nd at the 1991 Girls’ State Swim Championship in both the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events and earned 1st and 2nd place in the same events at the Bay View Invitational. In March of 1991, Jen qualified for the Junior Nationals with the 400 yard freestyle Relay team from Swim RI. This relay team went on to place 16th at Junior Nationals. In 1992, Jen placed 1st in both the 50 and 100 freestyles, setting a new pool record in the 50 free at RI Girls’ State meet. She placed 1st and 2nd in these events that year at the Bay View Invitational. In 1992, she again qualified for Junior Nationals this time in an individual event, the 100 butterfly.
In 1992, at The University of Connecticut Jen continued to improve breaking numerous records and garnering multiple awards over her four years. As a freshman, Jen was named New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association’s Female Swimmer of the Week. She set UConn school records by swimming the butterfly leg of the 100 and 400 medley relays and as a member of the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams. She helped UConn finish 2nd at the New England Intercollegiate Swim Championship meet and 5th at the Big East Championships that year. She was awarded the UConn Outstanding Freshman Award. As a sophomore, Jen again set records as a member of the 200 medley and 200 and 400 freestyle relays and helped her team to a 1st place finish at the ECAC’s with a 1st place finish swimming the butterfly leg of the 200 medley relay. As a junior, she continued to perform with excellence as she set UConn records in the 100 butterfly, 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay, and the 400 freestyle relay. The team finished 1st that year at the New England’s and at the ECAC’s. At the ECAC’s Jen captured 1st place in the 100 butterfly and swimming the fly as part of the 200 medley relay. Perhaps her most notable accomplishment was becoming the Big East Champion in the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.31. As a UConn senior, Jen was named a captain of the women’s team. She led them to a 1st place finish at New England’s by capturing 1st in the 100 butterfly, 200 medley relay, and 400 medley relay. She also helped lead her team to a 1st place finish at the ECAC’s by earning 1st in the 200 and 400 medley relays (both meet record times) and with a 3rd place finish in the 100 fly. Jen was given the UConn Club Award for Outstanding Senior Athlete. She set UConn swimming records in the 200 and 400 medley relays and the 200 freestyle relay. Her efforts earned her First Team All-Big East, ALL-ECAC, and ALL-New England honors.
She has been inducted into the Warren High School Athletic hall of Fame for being the only swimmer to represent Warren High School and Achieve ALL-State honors. She has been inducted into the UConn Swimming Hall of Fame for being the first UConn swimmer to earn a Big East title in the 1000 butterfly.
