STEVEN J. WALSH

1995 INDUCTION TO THE RHODE ISLAND AQUATIC HALL OF FAME

Steve began his career at the Pawtucket YMCA and the Cumberland-Lincoln Boys Club where he still holds six individual records. He won numerous individual awards in AAU age group swimming. From 1972-1982 he was a Rhode Island State Champion in ten events and was named to the Rhode Island Junior League All-Star Team each year during that period. He was the Pawtucket YMCA Most Valuable Swimmer in 1972 & 1974, while winning many RISCOA. age group championships in the butterfly, backstroke, I.M., and freestyle events. Steve broke a twenty year Rhode Island AAU record in the 50 yard butterfly in 1978. Steven was named to the Rhode Island All-Star Team that competed against the Pointe Claire All-Stars from Quebec. He won the 50 yard butterfly, 200 yard I.M. and was a member of the victorious 200 yard Medley Relay Team at that meet.

      In the summers, Steve was champion nine times in freestyle, backstroke, and butterfly events. He was captain of the Sher-Le-Mon team in 1980 and named Most Valuable swimmer three different years. Steve also won the summer league diving championship in 1980. During the summers Steve was a lifeguard captain at Lincoln Woods.

            While at Cumberland High School, Steve earned championships in the 100 yard backstroke, 100 yard butterfly in meet record time, and the 400 yard freestyle relay in 1982. He was captain his senior year and was named RI Interscholastic Swimmer of The Year in 1982. He was named to the All-Valley teams in 1979 to 1982. Steve was First Team All-State in the 100 yard backstroke in

1980, and in 1982 was First Team Ail-State in the 100 yard backstroke, 100 yard butterfly and the 200 yard freestyle relay.

Steve went on to Boston College where he was a four year letter winner and graduated as the teams 10th all-time leading scorer. He made the Dean’s List his senior year and graduated with a computer science degree. He was the first BC swimmer to break 2:00 (1 :56.3) in the 200 butterfly and held that record when he graduated. He also held records in the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke.

     Steve is now the District Manager for E.M.C. in Massachusetts and resides in Ashland, Massachusetts with his wife Patricia and their two boys, Jack and Ryan.
