ANTHONY HAYTER
2000 INDUCTION TO THE RHODE ISLAND AQUATIC HALL OF FAME
Tony was introduced to swimming at a very young age in his native England. Upon his arrival in the United States, his love of swimming carried him into coaching at the Pawtucket YMCA. Success quickly followed as the Pawtucket YMCA became one of the state’s perennial age group powers with several of his swimmers achieving New England and national rankings. Pawtucket YMCA won state championships in 1970, 1972, and 1975. They also won various championships within the Rhode Island Junior League.
In 1970, Hayter and long-time Seekonk High School coach Ellis Mayers were selected to coach the Rhode Island All-Star team that competed in England. Seventeen of Hayter’s swimmers were on the Rhode Island All-Star team that competed in Virginia in 1974. Steve McCafferty, a nationally ranked age group swimmer and high school All American, and Kurt Langborg, also an All American High School swimmer while at Cumberland High, are among the swimmers developed under Tony’s tutelage.
Tony resides in North Providence and continues to coach locally with the Boy’s and Girl’s Clubs of East Providence.
