CAROL KEENAN

1997 INDUCTION TO THE RHODE ISLAND AQUATIC HALL OF FAME

 

Carol began her swimming career at the Pawtucket YMCA and Abbott Run Valley Club where she claimed the State Championship titles in the 25 yard and 50 yard freestyles. She was Rhode Island’s state indoor and outdoor champion in the freestyles from ages 8-16.

Carol swam for Cumberland High School and the Cumberland Swim Club under coach Bruce Calvert. At age 17, she earned state senior championships in 50 / 100 / 200 / 500 / 1650 freestyles and set state records at all distances.

Carol became the top woman freestyler in the state for four years. Carol’s other accomplishments include anchoring State Champion freestyle and medley relays, a State Championship medley relay (backstroke), and New England Champion in the medley relay (freestyle anchor). 

            Carol entered Boston University on a swimming scholarship, and was elected the Captain of the Women’s Swim Team in 1979-1 980 and again in 1980-1981

While earning her degree in Physical Therapy, Carol also managed to achieve 69 first places in dual meets. In 1979 and 1980 she earned the New England Championship titles in the 100 freestyle, 400 freestyle relay, and 400 medley relay. In 1980 and 1981 she anchored New England Champion relays including the 200 medley, 200 freestyle, and 400 freestyle.

Following graduation from Boston University, Carol continued to compete in triathlons and was ranked 15th in the world in the sprint distance by the Association of Professional

Triathletes.
