2006 INDUCTION TO THE RHODE ISLAND AQUATIC HALL OF FAME

 

Dave began swimming at Sher-Le-Mon Swim Club at the age of 11.  He was a Rhode Island All-State swimmer in 1977 and 1978 at Cumberland High School. In his senior year, Dave contributed to the team’s New England Championship with two straight RI State Swimming titles, and three Max Read Memorial Championships. He was a member of the medley relay team that broke a RI State record, and a Brown Interscholastic Swimming Championship record.  He capped his senior year by winning the Max Read Championship in the 200 yard individual medley.

Dave swam at the University of Rhode Island, breaking the 100 yard breaststroke record in the first swim meet of his college career and contributed to the team’s best dual meet record. He was selected tri-captain in his senior year and awarded Most Outstanding Swimmer by his teammates.  Dave was a starter on the URI water polo team that won third place at the Eastern Regional Championships.

Dave competes in New England Masters swimming. He has achieved two Top Ten World Rankings for the 400 IM and 200 backstroke, and 16 United States Masters Swimming Top Ten Times.  In 1993 he broke the New England Masters record in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 21.65 and has held records in the 200 yard backstroke, 50 and 100 yard breaststroke and the 400 yard individual medley.

Dave competes in Marathons, Triathlons, Biathlons, running and cycling races.  In 1983, he broke 3 hours in the Long Island, NY Marathon. He won the 1995 Barrington Triathlon, the 2004 Providence Mayors Challenge Cycling race, and placed fourth in 1997’s RI Save the Bay Swim. He was a volunteer coach at the RAMS Swim Club at URI and also coached at the South County YMCA.

Dave is married to Elizabeth Greer Coté and lives in South Kingston with their three children: Amanda, Christopher and Charles.
