GENE LATHAM

1999 INDUCTION TO THE RHODE ISLAND AQUATIC HALL OF FAME

 

Gene Latham competed for the Providence Central Boys Club in the late 1 940 1 s and early 1950’ s. He swam for his father, Hall of Fame Coach Bud Latham. Locally, Gene was always a top finisher in the meets he competed in. He earned his first New England Title in 1 947, in the 100 Freestyle. Gene earned a New England AAU one mile and Long-Distance Title in 1948. He earned National Junior Title in 1950, and Senior National Long Distance Title in 1951 .

Latham attended Williams College where he served as Captain of the freshman team in 1952. Gene earned the Prince Trophy, awarded to the outstanding freshman swimmer. In 1953, he was a member of the New England Champion 400 Freestyle Relay Team. He served as Captain of the team in 1955, having competed in every event in college, including diving. Upon graduation, Gene went on to The Hotchkiss School in Connecticut where he taught and served as the swim coach.

Presently, Gene is the Editor of Mexletter, a monthly investment newsletter in Mexico. He is married and has seven children.
