JOHN GALVIN

1999 INDUCTION TO THE RHODE ISLAND AQUATIC HALL OF FAME

 

Galvin was an excellent age group swimmer for the Olneyviile Boys’ Club. By the age of 14, he was the dominant backstroke swimmer in New England. He set numerous state records, was the New England Senior Champion and also became a Junior National Champion in the 100 yard backstroke.

At LaSalle Academy, Galvin was named to the interscholastic All-State team in 1957, 1958 and 1959. He was the New England Interscholastic Champion and National Catholic runner-up in both 1958 and 1959. John also earned High School All American honors in 1959.

John continued his success while on scholarship at St. Louis University. He quickly became one of the school’s stars and established records in the backstroke, 200 yard individual medley and as a member of the 400 yard medley relay. During his collegiate career, John Galvin was a consistent conference finalist. John is a Cranston resident and recently retired from the Cranston Fire Department after 20 years of distinguished service.
