MICHAEL WESTKOTT

1990 INDUCTION TO THE RHODE ISLAND AQUATIC HALL OF FAME

Mick has been the men’s swimming and diving coach at the University of Rhode Island for eighteen years and the women’s swimming and diving coach for fifteen years.  He has developed eighteen New England champions, two National Division I Zone qualifying divers, two women National Division II qualifiers, two LeBeof Award winners (most outstanding student-athlete at the University of Rhode Island), one Keaney Award Winner (most outstanding senior female athlete at the University of Rhode Island), and two Robert B. Muir award winners (New England College swimmers earning the most points in four years of New England Collegiate Championship swimming).  In 1987 and 1990 he was recognized as the New England Intercollegiate Swimming Coach of the Year.

Mick has directed and worked at a number of swimming clinics and summer swim camps throughout Rhode Island and the United States.  He was directly responsible for bringing outstanding United States and International Coaches to Rhode Island for the purpose of educating our local athletes and coaches.

Coach Westkott is a volunteer member of the Rhode Island Special Olympics.  As aquatic director he has been instrumental in the success of Special Olympic competition since 1984.

Mick is a charter member of the Board of Directors of Rhode Island Aquatic Hall of Fame.  He has served on the Hall of Fame board from 1981 to the present and was President from 1986 to 1988.
