MIKE BARROWMAN

2000 INDUCTION TO THE RHODE ISLAND AQUATIC HALL OF FAME

1992 Olympic Champion and current world record holder in the 200 meter breaststroke, competed as an age group swimmer in the Cumberland-Lincoln Boys Club where he set numerous state and New England records.  The son of a cartographer for the U.S. Army, Barrowman moved often and left Rhode Island in 1981.  He went on to compete at the University of Michigan where he became a multi-event winner at the NCAA Championships and was named NCAA Swimmer of the Year in 1990.

In 1988, Barrowman competed in the Seoul Olympics, finishing fourth in the 200 breaststroke.  Following that, Barrowman went undefeated in major international competitions culminating in a world record, gold medal winning swim in the 200 breaststroke at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992.  Barrowman holds 5 of the 10 best times in history in his specialty and his time of 2:10.60 has been untouched for eight years.

Barrowman was named American and World Swimmer of the Year in 1989 and 1990 by Swimming World magazine ,and was a three-time Swimmer of the Year by United States Swimming.  During an interview with Swimming World, Barrowman stated that his success was greatly due to the years that he spent swimming in Rhode Island.

Mike currently owns and operates his own film company, and resides in the Cayman Islands.
