PAUL WILSON

2018 INDUCTION TO THE RHODE ISLAND AQUATIC HALL OF FAME

 

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wilson had their three sons-Mike, Paul, and Jeff-swimming at early ages for the Cumberland Lincoln Boys and Girls Club under Carl LaBranche.  Paul rose to the top of Rhode Island Age Group swimming winning the 100 and 200 breaststroke in many age group championship meets.   He competed in summer league for Sher-Le-Mon and Kirkbrae Swim Club swimming under Carl LaBranche and Peter Zeiger.  Swimming in the Narragansett Swim League annual summer championships Paul won numerous events and championships.  Paul went on to swim for Lincoln High School under coach Kurt Langborg.  Paul was named captain during his junior and senior year.  He was runner up at the Interscholastic state Championship to Andy Robinson in both his junior and senior years. Prior to college, Paul continued his Age Group Swimming under Kevin Thonrton at the Cumberland Area Swim team (CAST).  While representing CAST, Paul competed at Junior Nationals three times.

            Paul attended Northeastern University swimming under coach Janet Swanson.  Janet stated, “Paul was a motivator of his teammates, electing him captain, while winning multiple championships during his college career. Paul had a wonderful sense of humor and was fun to be around.”  He dominated his four years in college going undefeated in his 100 and 200 breaststroke events. He set Northeastern school records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, 200 and 400 individual medley and also as a member of the 200 and 400 medley relays, as well as the 800 freestyle relay.  Paul was the top point scorer in the New England Intercollegiate swimming Championship over his four years, receiving the prestigious Charles Batterman Award.

            Paul was inducted into the Northeastern University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014.

            Paul lives in Agoura Hills, California, with his wife Carly and their son Tadd.
