STEPHAN JOE
2010 INDUCTION TO THE RHODE ISLAND AQUATIC HALL OF FAME
Stephan’s career started at the Newman YMCA. He attended LaSalle Academy from 1989—1993 swimming for Victor and Joseph Bevilacqua. He also competed for the USS at EBAC for Matt Connery and Sandy Gorham. Stephan earned All State standings in the 200 Free, 200 1.M., 100 Breast, 200 Medley Relay, 200 and 400 Free Relays. He finished fourth in the 200 I.M. and second in the 100 Breast at the Max Reed Invitational his junior year. As a senior, he was the meet and state record holder of the 200 Free Relay. He won the 200 Free at the Brown Invitational; the 200 free at the Max Reed Memorial and was undefeated in the 100 Breast.
From 1993 – 1996, he attended Northeastern University. As a freshman, he was a North Atlantic Conference finalist and ECAC qualifier in the 200 1.M., the 100 and the 200 yard Breast. Stephan transferred to Providence College for his senior year swimming for John O’Neill. While at PC he was a Big East Semi-Finalist in the 400 I.M, an ECAC Semi-Finalist in the 200 Breast,
He was the Providence College recipient of the David Hardy Coach’s Award.
As a Masters Swimmer, he has held many New England and Zone records in SCY, SCM and LCM. These records span each age group in which he’s competed. Stephan’s individual records have been in the 50, 100, and 200 yard Breast, the 200 and 400 yard Individual Medley, the 50 yard Fly and the 400 yard free. He has also achieved numerous All American honors while establishing nearly 100 US Top Ten placing. Stephan continues to be a top competitor earning FINA Top Ten Masters World Rankings in SCM from 2004 to the present. He also has earned All American Honors on the Triathlon circuit.
