TIMOTHY N. PHELAND

1994 INDUCTION TO THE RHODE ISLAND AQUATIC HALL OF FAME

Tim swam competitively for the Cranston YMCA and the Little Rhody Aquatic Club as an 11 year old and began a record breaking and championship career. He attended LaSalle Academy where he earned Interscholastic All State Honors for four years, 1978, 1979, 1980, and 1981. In his Senior year he was named Rhode Island Swimmer of the Year, and he still holds the record (:47.3 sec) in the 100 yard freestyle.

In 1981, Tim was the Rhode Island State champion in the 100 yard freestyle, the 200 yard individual medley and the 400 yard freestyle relay, setting records in each event. He was also the New England Interscholastic Champion in the 50 yard freestyle, the 100 yard freestyle, and the 400 yard freestyle relay, setting records in the latter two.

Swimming for the West Virginia University Mountaineers, Tim was a four year letterman, and was named team captain in 1985. He participated for the NCAA qualifying relay team in 1982.

Tim lifeguarded at Scarborough State Beach from 1980 to 1985 and was lifeguard Ironman Champion in 1982, 1983 and 1984.

Tim received his B.S. in Business Administration from Bryant College in 1986 and was honored in 1992 as an Inductee to the North Providence Sports Hall of Fame.

Since 1989 Tim has volunteered his time to help run the Max Reed Invitational Swim meet.
